Perhaps, the most popular gift all over the world is the
gift of flowers. Whether it is a carefully chosen bouquet
of flowers or just a stem, it is sure to convey a warm
feeling to the recipient. It's not only because the flowers
are beautiful and their fragrance is exhilarating, they
carry the freshness of nature and the world outside with
them. They appeal to all our senses and brighten up our
homes and our hearts. Every time we look at them, we feel
grateful to the sender for giving us so much joy.
If you are an avid follower of history, you must have come
across the fact that flowers and herbs have been used since
ancient times for many purposes. They have also had
different significances in different cultures. Early Romans
made brides carry flowers, which they believed would not
only ward off evil spirits but ensure fertility as well.
Long before the development of a scientific temper among
people of medieval Europe floral nosegays and strong herbs
were used thinking that they would protect the bearer from
ill health.
The association of flowers with special events in life is
also an old tradition. Flowers have always been a part and
parcel of special occasions like weddings, births,
funerals, thank yous and congratulations, as they are
today. Of course, people no longer believe in evil spirits
and the ability of flowers to ward them off, but they admit
that flowers have a positive influence on human emotions. A
thing of beauty is joy forever, and there is rarely anyone
so insensitive who doesn't get affected by the sheer beauty
and fragile elegance of flowers. They represent love and
optimism.
Flowers as gifts of love are as expressive and as eloquent
as words, if not more. In fact, where words fall short and
fail to express some deep sentiments, flowers convey them
much more beautifully. You can either arrange a bunch of
flowers creatively yourself, or take the professional help
of a florist to put together an artistic bouquet. However
you choose to make your gift of flowers, you can be sure it
will convey all your sentiments to the recipient.
Flowers may be gift items, but they are also a gift from
Nature that has a powerful effect on us all. You might have
at times used flowers to change the mood of a loved one
from somber to delightful. Flowers evoke memories of the
good times, youth, beauty and happiness. Freshly plucked
flowers and arrangements could thus be purveyors of your
thoughts and feelings if you choose them to be.
